Joe, you're right on that one, just like when folks were teasing Hesh about his s**b****ed guitars, they were just jealous of him for having such good taste!
Hiya Ron,
What the hecky are railroad spikes? I've never heard of this for a 5th string banjo capo?
They are spikes for model railroad tracks. Get them at a hobby shop or StewMac has them. I have one at the 7th, 9th, and 10th fret. Drill a tiny hole and epoxy it in place so the top is directly below the 5th string, low enough that the string doesn't hit it when played. They have a little hook on top that the string can be caught on. Just push the string down and slide it under the spike and it is capoed. Works great and you never know they're there when not in use. I think that Scruggs mentioned them in his book.
Well, you guys can make banjo jokes all you want,
THANKS!

What do you call a good musician at a banjo contest?
    A Guitarist

I recently had surgery on my hand, and asked the doctor if, after surgery, I would be able to play the banjo. He said, "I'm doing surgery on your hand, not giving you a lobotomy."

What's the best way to tune a banjo?
       Wirecutters

What's the difference between a banjo player and a Locksmith?
A Locksmith gets paid to change keys.

There's nothing I like better than the sound of a banjo-
unless it's the sound of a chicken caught in a vacuum cleaner

Mark Twian's definition of a gentleman:
A man that can play the banjo and don't. Billy T38892.6205671296

Lester Flatts and Earl Scruggs, put those two together and it does not get any better.

I have found the banjo difficult to play, had very little trouble picking up a mandolin and figuring things out. I picked up a banjo at an Antique Auction several years ago, fixed a few things, played with it a few times and now it sits in a case.

Good luck on the build

True confessions time? I have been slowly picking up parts for a first class banjo from First Quality. They seem to have the best alternatives for a fine banjo. For those that build the flatpickers' dream, the bold Dreadnoughts, I ask"Wouldn't traditional bluegrass music be lessened by exclusion of the banjo?" The humor here is good natured and funny, but how can one not be switched on by "Earl's Breakdown?", or "Foggy Mountain" and more. If its good enough for Pete Seeger, its good enough for me..On another philosophical note-the banjo seems to be the instrument that provides the canvas for continuation of the baroque decorative style in musical instruments. I'll wager no one has ever looked at one and said "Too much pearl." Keep up the jokes, though, one can never laugh too often.MT

KEEP UP THE BANJO JOKES! I laugh at lawyer jokes too. When I first signed on here, I came upon the banjo jokes, dreadnought jokes and sunburst jokes. I giggle at them all.Oh, and a good sunburst is a true work of art;--not that there's anything wrong with that. On the other hand, I'm quite offended by sharpening jokes. MT

Hesh, everyone here appreciates your sense of humor and i hope you know that sometimes i take banjo players 's side to counter balance, but your jokes always are respectful of individuals and we know the true fine man you are so don't worry bud, you're all forgiven now!

Excuse me now, goin to the lake to paddle with an old sunbursted Yamaha!

I love a happy ending!
I give the OLF credit for my lousy jokes but not for my crappy personality.....
Crappy Personality?? You hide it well Bud!! You must have sunbursted that too!!

The only problem I have with a burst is it's association with crappy plywood guitars. You have to admit that it's usually used, in a sick attempt, to cover very bad things!! I think the burst Hesh and Lance put on there guitars looks great. I not just saying that to suck up too Lance either, I "also"     think it looks good the way Tony did it!!!

That banjo that John Kinnaird made looks beautiful too! I just don't want to listen too it! SORRY !!!

It's like a beautiful woman, "look but don't listen!"

Having unloaded my favorite banjo joke, I have to admit that I like them - but I have no clue how to approach the technology as a builder - it seesm to be a very technical venture.

I have built a number of banjo necks, mostly of the Vega variety. For
an excellent quality bluegrass banjo I would look into the offerings
at First Quality Music. They can supply you with a pot turned for the
tone ring of you choice for a reasonable sum. The also offer
partially machined necks to fit those pots. The neck set will be the
hardest part, aside from sun bursting the whole thing!!

Also, How do you get a banjo player off your porch?

You pay for the pizza.

And....

What do you say to the banjo player in the tree piece suit?

Will the defendant please rise!

ETC> ETC.

Good luck,

Louis
