Goncalo Alves?

Kim, the 1st side you show is definitely the one. There's a woman there! Complete with raised arms, hair, and mammarian protuberances.

Best,

Michael

Well, no one has hit the mark as yet naming the wood and there is no digital trickery at play but Hesh is right about the interesting insight the descriptions are providing, Oh uncle Sigmund!

Keep them coming, it seems so far, most prefer image 2?

Cheers

Kim

No clue on the wood, I like both photos, it works either way. If I were building it I would probably select #2

Black Wattle

Best,

Wow! My first tub-o-lard!

Google is indeed a magical thing.

Welp, I think I'll go fire up the griddle and start dipping chicken in buttermik batter.

Best,

Michael
These “name that zoot” threads are very telling from a psychological point of view……..
Is this like a zoot ink-blot? Or is it the other way around...you get the ink-blot but only see zoot?!?

Well Martin and anyone else interested,

I posted this set partly to disprove the common misconception out there that Aussie blackwood is much lighter in colour than Koa, as you can see this is not always the case.

This is old growth chocolate brown stuff from a board that was about 8' long x 14" wide but only <1/2" (10 to 12mm) thick. I got it from a guy who had scrounged it years ago from a mill in Tassi to use for small boxes but decided it was of no use to him. It was quite badly twisted and cupped when I got and apparently destine for scrap so I only paid $10.00AU for it.

After wetting it down for a while I then racked it out, it took about a year stacked under some big thick HEAVY slabs of Jarrah to press it flat enough to resaw. The board had deep chainsaw gouges in various places along it's length that made it just too thin in those particular areas (sub 5mm) to book-match and also there was some dead knots here and there along the board that needed to be avoided.

All in all I was fortunate to be able to convert it to 2 full B/S sets a few bridges and some head-plates but it was certainly worth the effort, it's a pretty bit of wood don't you think and it taps like glass.

Whilst I was at it, I managed to get 2 x 8" x <1/2" x 8' boards of plainer grade blackwood from the same bloke. These were remnants from a veneering plant so I resawed them as well and ended the day with 5 full sets and sundries. Some of the plainer stuff is just that but will work good for a more embellished guitar, as apposed to the chocolate brown stuff pictured for which I will let the wood do the talking.

Here is an image of the other chocolate set and a smaller one showing the chainsaw gouges, don't know what was going on there??

Cheers All and thanks for your input.

Kim

Um, I believe I asked if it was acacia very early in the post of this thread. It should be MY tub o' lard!
It could be one of the Acacia family but it is defiantly not a eucalyptus.
Now, now Donald, don't go spitting the dummy on me.

With SOME 1350 members of the Acacia family on the planet, I just wanted you to be a little more specific, as was implied by the tone of my reply. You ask if it could be, and I replied that it indeed could.

However, you will be very pleased to know that I have begrudgingly approached the adjudicator (9 year old daughter Darci) on your behalf and she has suggested that in order to maintaining cordial relations between our nations and foster good will among all men, you should be awarded an economy size jar of beef dripping for "trying hard"

Sorry mate, she's pretty tough, just like her Mum.

Cheers

Kim
