I was thinking about doing this in white mop for a 12th fret marker. Since it's on the fret board I would have to engrave it after it's in place and the fretboard radiused. Has any one ever did this before? What kind of problems do you think I may run into? Do you think it's to big of a job for someone with no engraving experience.

Thanks, Dale

I think it is a prime example of what to start with. I would practice in some scrap before stating but go for it

Dale,

From what I see, most of the lines could be cut with the saw. You may want to go as small as a 6/0 blade.
As for engraving after inlay, just be extra careful near the edges to avoid small gouges in the wood or chipping!

Good luck!
Paul

Thanks, What kind of tool would you recomend for the engraving. I've looked at what Stew Mac has to offer, anything else come to mind?

Dale,

You could use a carbide scribe with a fine point but will be limited to a single line width as compared to,say, an onglette graver.
The gravers can be "leaned" slightly left or right to widen a line, and also cut a bit easier when sharpened properly.
Keep in mind, there are no "rules". I once engraved a 3 inch tall Eiffel tower, girder by girder, with a single edge razor after breaking my scribe! Oh the pain... But, it did work!
