Way to go Jeanne, good decision and it sure will help you get you accustomed to the components more quickly!
BTW, I found a place to buy HHG in the 192 gram strength high clarity with a 5 ponud minimum order. If anyone is interested I'll post it.
Hey Dave,

I would be very keen for you to post the link, it may be really helpful to us folks in Australia.

EG: A few weeks back I ordered 3 lb of HHG from a vendor. Great people and all and I had always been treated extremely well by them but this time, despite requesting the cheapest airfreight because I was in no hurry and I wished to keep my cost down, the glue was sent and my card was debited for Express Mail Service to Australia.

Anyhow, the long and short is that freight ended up costing me $36.80 USD for $26.00 USD order of glue that equates to near $30.00 AUD per 1 lb tub .

I had tried going direct to the manufacturer prior to placing that order, but they only do 50lb at a time so that was out. Given the popularity of HHG on this list, I am surprised that there was no interest in a group buy when I suggested this a while back...oh well.

Anyhow Dave, if your source ships to AU this could work very well. We Aussies may be able to put together a local group buy, and anyhow 5 lb at a time is perfect for me regardless, so please post away or PM the link to me.

As for the vendor not mentioned above Here is a clue, some may remember me posting my praise, on a couple of occasions now, for how these guys had handled a faulty products issue I had which was caused by one of their suppliers, with such class that they left a lasting impression on me.

So much so in fact, that they set a bench mark for me by which to judge other vendors in the area of customer service. If you do now know to whom I refer, I want you to know that I maintain my support for them regardless of the above-mentioned hic-up. But, a lesson has been learnt. I will ALWAYS ask for a shipping quote when dealing with them in future, instead of just relying on the person packing my order to do their best for me.

Whoops, got caught up in ma rant and nearly forgot, well done Hesh, as always I have difficulty deciding which I like more, your lutherie, or you photograph.

Both as always exceptional.

Cheers all

Kim

Nice job Hesh, as usual.

Don't worry about the slab sawn brace, all of the braces on my lutes are slab sawn as a matter of course, allows the top to flex more.

Kim, The folks I got my HHG from are Bjorn Industries. I sent them an email requesting a price list and they responded quickly. I sent another email and asked them to send me 5 pounds of their 192 TG grade of HHG. They shipped the glue and invoiced me, net 15 days. Quick shipping too!

Is that bottle you're using for your HHG about 4 oz or so? If so, do you mind if I ask where you get them?

I have some small bottles but they are tall and skinny so they lay on their side. This allows water to leak into the glue.

Dave, just put bolts at the bottom of your bottle to hold it down in your hot pot like Mario does.

Serge, my bottles are a little too tall as well and I would like to find some of the short squatty looking ones like Hesh is using. I will put the bolts in there as well though. Thanks buddy!

Hesh,
This may have been mentioned and I missed it but the tone bar that is orientated gross grain I would think is likely to be robbing energy from the top. As the energy is transferred from the x-brace through the tone bar the energy is encountering a terminal node due to the structure being cross grained. I am no expert at energy dispersal but common since tells me that it will be robbing energy.MichaelP38925.5291087963

Hesh as I said all the braces on lutes are and always have been, put on flat sawn, and they produce plenty of energy from very low energy strings (I hate the loose use of the word energy!). You have already added a rift sawn bridge plate and will be putting on the biggest brace of all a rift sawn bridge, that probably weighs as much of as the rest of the braces put together, and all the 'energy' is transmitted to the top through them. Sometimes the left side of the brain gets in the way.

in a friendly and theoretical debate mode here, It is possible to have a brace that is flat sawn, that the direction of the grain run is still with the length of the brace. This would transmit vibrations more efficiently than if the brace is quarted or flat sawn with the direction of the grain being perpendicular to the length of the brace. I am not saying this absolute fact just that my mechanical logic seem to support this. Also a bridge plate, though riff sawn, the direction of the grain is running towards the x-brace. Now the intersection of the bridge plate is near perpendicular to the x-brace grain orientation.

I am interested in you thoughts and anyone else'sMichaelP38925.6349768518
