I was wondering how long you fellas wait to string up a guitar after your bridge has been glued on?

I wait at least 24 hours. Someone told me that was the correct amount of time but I can't remember who it was.

Oh yeah, I use HHG to glue my bridges on. Could be different with other glues.

Depends on how much beer remains in the bottle. If it's full, could be 3 minutes...1/2 or less, probably no more than about 45 seconds.

I wait 48 hours before putting any tension on the bridge, just to be safe.

Yep, after all the hours, trial and tribulations of building a git-box, I like to wait at least 24 hrs. I also use HHG.

I'd like to be able to prove, just for once, that money wouldn't make me happy...

I generally glue the bridge mid day or end of the day, and then string her up the next morning.

Once though, I glued a bridge on and strung the guitar after one hour and it was/is fine.

Usually I use the fish glue.

I use LMI white and give it a bit over 24 hours...

I used LMI white and rushed the clamping which I would guess at about 10 hours. Stung it up within another 4 and the bridge crept toward the nut overnight about 1/8".

Re-glued and left it clamped for 24 hours. Re0strung and no problems for a year now.

I have strung up a guitar after about 3 hrs or so and it was fine, but I think the 24 hr wait time is the best way. I was in a hurry.

Someone can correct me if Im wrong but isnt the shear strength of PVA glue not that good compared to AR and HHG?

With my guitars I usually give it 24hrs before stringing up, I use HHG, but that is usually because I glue it up one evening, go to work, then string it up next evening.

On my lutes the gap is usuallly something like 2 or 3 months. That's because I glue on the bridge before gluing the top to the shell!

Martin,

AR glue IS PVA glue, with some additives. I understand the name change was a marketing spin, to distinguish it from the Elmer's white we used in grade school. There are some premium whites, like the LMI stuff, that are as strong (maybe stronger) in shear as the yellow.

I realise that AR glue is modified PVA but I was led to believe that resistance to shear stress is better for AR than PVA. I havent used LMI's PVA so dont know much about it but I have found the commonly available PVAs (eg Selley's) here in Australia inferior to Titebond for bridge gluing.

Nobody's talking, but perhaps the only white glue that's any good for lutherie is made by Franklin (the Titebond people), and distributed under other names. There was a thread here some time ago about a certain type of Franklin white, only sold in gallons, that seems to be worthy for lutherie.

As far as LMI's white, my limited experiments have shown it to dry harder than any other AR/PVA I've had my hands on. A dry blob of it wants to break rather than bend. To me, that would indicate less creeping and greater shear strength. I haven't even reached "dilettante," much less "expert," though, so YMMV.

I dunno folks, I just use the white stuff that I got from The DIY store.
