purfling question

I`ve had trouble with purflings wanting to twist when applied below the bindings on the sides of the guitar.Especially in the waist.I`d like to pre bend these.They are just your typical B/W/B commercial purfs.Can I glue them to the wood bindings with CA and then bend in the bender or how do some of you folks do this? & nbsp; James

That's what I've done. Works well.

I run a thin line of CA along one seam.

Also, after gluing, tape pairs together tightly every few inches so the purfling strips get pressed against each other, then cook 'em in the bender.

Jim, I use the b/w/b Fine Multi-Line Purfling - Double Length that LMI sells, its fiber. They readily bend around the waist with no problems at all.

I do pretty much the same, although I use titebond instead of CA. I didn't want to risk gluing my fingers together while fussing with the purfling.

I titebond the purf to the binding, sand them to .080, tape them together, just a little water, wrap them in aluminum foil, put em in the bender.

I use titebond 3 for this operation as it's and it holds up great under the bending process, better than CA in my experience.
I've also noticed that the double length stuff that LMI sells has a tendancy to twist. I think it may be due to the coiling of it when they ship it. I like it though.

When using the “Fine Multi-Line Purfling” that Lance mentions, I find it easier to install it at the same time as the binding and top prufling, but without gluing anything together first. I tape the whole top or back binding / purfling up, adjust any miters or gaps or whatever until everything fits, then lightly hit it with CA glue. These purflings are so pliable that they will not buckle if they sit tightly between the binding and the rabbet, even when bent sideways in the a tight waist area.
