I am about to attempt to try my first backstrapping of a neck and I am using a "smiley face" volute. I was thinking of using 3 laminations of veneers that are approximately .03" each. Do you think that is too thin for each layer?

For those of you who do this on a regular basis, can you offer comments as to the thickness of your veneers or any problems you have encountered with this?

My plan is to shape the general upward swoop of the volute, glue down the veneers, then carve the volute to shape.

Again.... just looking for advice from those who have been there and fell into the holes before me....

Not sure what you mean by Backstrapping, are you talking about a rear headplate? I do exactly that, shape the plane of the volute/headstock and bend my plate to match this curve. Glue it on and shape the whole thing into a volute.

Brock. I normally do this with a really thin piece as well. 30 thou sounds
about right.. I can't remember what the thickness of my last one was, but
it was thin. I just glued it down after the curve had been put on the
headstock and then carved it.. just as you suggest.

Bob, it depends on the tuners you are using. I think 1/2" is a safe bet.

I think 1/2" is a little thin for Waverly's. The posts really stick out of the top. What are the rest of you guys using with Waverly's?
