I banned dimethylpoysiloxanes from a bakery producer as they are really effective anti foams, just what you dont want with certain baked goods. Part of the problem was the infitessimally small amount required to make a cake flop. Im talking less then detectable, ie 0.03ppm. The way it was explained to me is that they have very high surface attraction properties so the molecules just keep on spreading. The solid fully cross linked silicones were not the issue (ie, gap fillers or greases in electrical boards) it was the liquids. The issue I see is when you get to refinishing time,

I dont know what concentrations are the issue for finishing but I expect there is a minimum that needs to be declared on an MSDS? The level that causes the greif may be below reportable levels.

Once you read the whole thread that become clear, but otherwise it isn't. The thread title reads like an invitation to post examples of luthiery myths (and other respondants have done just that), but Todds first post isn't a myth - it's a truth, posted to rebutt a myth.

Ack, my brain hurts. gaah

I gotta love ya Steve!

It seems that lately I can make a post similar to:

"The sky is blue and I am giving out $100 bills to the first 10 people that ask me for them", and then I will get a thousand people wanting to argue about the color of the sky while nobody wants the money. idunno
I assume that is what you are experiencing as well? I have no clue as to the reasons for this odd behavior.

Is it a full moon? [uncle]

Speaking of silicone implants - I had an engineer friend at work who's previous job was making breast implants. He had several samples sitting on his desk.
When you went to talk with him you got to - well, let's just say he was a popular stop! bliss [clap]

I worked for years with a chemist whose previous job was working for a company who put teflon coatings on metal parts using controlled explosions to impregnate the metal with the teflon.

Nobody wanted to work with the guy because of his explosive history.

Tortex brand guitar picks sound just as good as Hawksbill tortoiseshell.

Tight grained spruce is stiffer and better sounding than wider grained spruce.

These are always funny threads as the list of "myths" grows and it becomes clear that they are all
really just opinions being expressed in the guise of a statement being an actual myth.

Many of the things that have been listed as myths are, in fact, very real and true, but then again,
that would be my opinion.

Funny stuff, nonetheless.

Regards,
Kevin Gallagher/Omega Guitars
