The long dowel is for the threadfs to bite into something other than just end grain, and also strenthens the entire heel a lot.

For the record, I've been using modified hanger bolts for about a year now. Good enough for Collings, good 'nuff for me... No issues yet, and only needs a 3/16" holes, and in my case, leaves more dowel intact.

The simple butt joint has proven itself plenty sturdy in hundreds of thousands of Taylors, Bourgeois, H&D, and countless others. I've done around 100 of them, and see no reason for a tenon.... honest.

Hey Mario,

In what way are the hanger bolts modified?

The issue is either too small of bore for the insert or the insert not tapping in square. Many bore a larger hole and glue in a hardwood dowel then bore the hardwood dowel slightly larger bore than the insert shank. This is a saftey factor if the dowel cracks it will not transfer to the neck. but I use The same thing as the LMI inserts and have hade no issues. I bore 1/64 the bore size andline with titebond before I screw it inMichaelP38923.4165509259

Thanks Mario.

One more question if I may. Do you countersink the neck block where the nuts attatch to the hanger bolts? If so, do you cap the nuts, ala Collings?

Thanks,

-Mark

Yeah, i countersink the bolt holes, using a 3/4" reverse spotfacer...

I place my interior label on the ehadblock, over the bolts.

I used my first butt joint on my last, and I'll do it on all the rest of my builds. I also used a 5/16" dowel glued in first, then drilled my 1/4" bolt inserts. I got my hardware from Ace hardware. It is Stainless Steel hex threaded bolts, and steel inserts. Worked beautifully, and really cheap! Good luck!
